Emergency Lighting

Emergency Lighting Information

Emergency lighting is intended to provide sufficient illumination to enable people to see their way safely out of a building in case of emergency when the normal lighting fails, it also provides illumination for occupants to locate fire alarms, firefighting and first aid equipment.

Emergency lights are required:-

· Along escape routes

· At every change of direction

· Adjacent to any step or trip hazard

· Over every flight of stairs

· Close to call points and firefighting equipment

· Close to any first aid points

· Outside every final exit

It is important that emergency lights are tested and maintained so that they operate correctly when required in an emergency.

The following tests are to be conducted to ensure emergency lights will operate in the event of a emergency.

User checks:-

Daily – visually check all lamps are lit if maintained lights (always on) or green/red led light is illuminated. If non maintained lights the emergency light will only come on when the mains lights fail.

Monthly – check all emergency lighting equipment is clean not damaged or blackened.

Briefly test all emergency lights by simulating a failure of the normal lighting supply.

Six monthly – carry out tests as monthly but test all emergency lights to one third of its working duration (normally one hour).

Annually – A full system test is required which has to be carried out by a competent person/company to ensure the location and efficiency of the emergency lights correct lux levels are checked condition of the batteries and the emergency lights are tested for their full duration.
